Until recently the beauty of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was a well-kept secret, but all that changed when the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were filmed there. Located between St. Lucia and Grenada in the Caribbean Sea, these picture-perfect volcanic islands boast sandy shores, rich wildlife and endless sailing and diving opportunities. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was ruled by the British from 1763 until 1979, when it became a sovereign state in the Commonwealth. This colonial past is chronicled in capital city Kingstown on the main island of Saint Vincent, where a lively marketplace bursting with fragrant spices and brightly-coloured fruit contrasts with cobbled streets and Georgian architecture. Visit St. George’s Anglican Cathedral, which features a stained glass window commissioned by Queen Victoria, and walk up to the 19th-century Fort Charlotte for spectacular views of the islands. Cricket fans can watch a game at the port city’s Arnos Vale Stadium.

Just outside of Kingstown, the beautiful Botanical Gardens are home to several bird species including the St. Vincent Parrot, while Montreal Gardens is another place to head to for a diverse display of flora and fauna. Beyond its capital city, Saint Vincent is known for its lush natural landscapes – explore the Vermont Nature Trail’s dense rainforest and waterfalls, looking out for an array of colourful wildlife.

Further afield, only eight of the Grenadines islands are inhabited – Bequia, Young Island, Mustique, Canouan, Union Island, Mayreau, Petit Saint Vincent and Palm Island – and their close proximity to each other makes this a great destination for island-hopping via private jet or speedboat. Bequia, the largest and the closest island to the mainland, is a historic sea-faring town where you can admire luxury yachts docked at Admiralty Bay. Princess Margaret Beach is the place to be, but if you fancy stretching your legs you can visit the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary and Moonhole to see some unusual stone houses built into the mountains. Boat building, sailing and fishing are traditional hobbies still enjoyed by the locals here.

The private island of Mustique is a magnet for the rich and famous, home to exclusive beaches like Macaroni, Pasture Bay and Endeavour Bay. In the past the island was home to sugar plantations, but today it’s decorated with palatial holiday homes and designer shops line the harbour. Celeb-spot over a drink at Basils Bar, enjoy a sunrise yoga class on the beach or play an afternoon game of doubles at the Mustique Tennis Club. For those who aren’t feeling that active, book a treatment at one of the world-class spas and savour a delicious dinner at Veranda Restaurant.

Young Island is another private island that’s a favourite for honeymooners, with 29 cottages tucked away amongst endless tropical gardens. Next in the chain is Canouan, which was recently given a facelift following the closure of after the Trump empire of casinos and villas. Canouan translates as ‘Island of Tortoises’ and wild tortoises can still be seen roaming around the island. In addition to the spas, private pools and fine dining that come with this type of high-end resort, keen golfers can tee-off at the 18-hole Jim Fazio championship golf course, beautifully set on a hillside overlooking the sea and surrounding islands.

The remote paradise of Tobago Kays National Marine Park marks the spot where Jack Sparrow was marooned in Pirates of the Caribbean and is an idyllic scuba diving destination. Further along you’ll find the palm-covered Mayreau Island, hiking paradise Union Island and the private resort of Palm Island are the next three stops on the island-hopping trail. A 30-minute boat ride away from Union Island is Petit Saint Vincent, the southernmost Grenadine Island, which is also an exclusive private resort.
