Hong Kong International Airport
Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport in Hong Kong. It is located on the island of Chek Lap Kok, which largely comprises land reclaimed for the construction of the airport itself. The airport is also colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport, to distinguish it from its predecessor, the now closed Kai Tak Airport. The airport replaced Kai Tak when it opened in July 1998 having taken six years and US$20 billion to build. The airport is now the world's busiest cargo gateway and one of the world's busiest passenger airports, handling more than 60 million passengers a year. Hong Kong Airport is AsiaPacific’s busiest international airport, has two terminals and two runways and is within five flying hours of half the world’s population. Part of the airport was built on a large artificial island, which added nearly 1% to Hong Kong's total surface area.
